Special Mention - Paul Stewart
Special Mention - Paul Stewart

As an important aside to my current blog, I must make mention of this.

As a yute,  nothing made Sundays better than a T-Bone steak dinner at Herb's Steak House. I even think my father enjoyed watching me eat. I'd order a large medium rare, eat what I could and would request that the rest be put in a doggy bag to take home. Even though the food was excellent what really got me was the Stewart Family. The restaurant was run by Herb Stewart, his wife and two sons. The two young men were always smartly dressed in their waiters uniform and provided unparalleled service... ah .... the early 70's.... anyway, Paul (Pablo) was about my age and William (Willie) was the elder of the two. Willie eventually became the drummer for his famous brother's band - Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires and then became a founding member of The Third World band. I  never saw Paul again until I moved from New York to Miami after my first year in college. We actually were flatmates for a while and it was his drive and confidence that helped inspire me to follow my ambitions. Pablo thoroughly admired his brother and as a family member of 'The Worlders Band' would tell us many stories of the exploits of the band. I was always amazed by Pablo's work ethic, I can imagine was cast form his early days at Herb's. Pablo had no problem with doing hard work... I did.. but still.. Pablo had no problem working for the Golf Clubs around town and would often be the job broker for those of us in need of work.. (Sorry Pablo.. I couldn't bring myself to work in the Club House).

We started our first band together and would jam in family garages at every opportunity. If my memeory serves me correctly , it was DWiilie, Pablo, Chis Chin, Bigga, and myself. Pablo, Dwillie and Chris moved back to Jamaica and formed Kotch Band and Bigga and my self did a short stint as the Upfront Band. I eventually moved to New York to finish my studies and having completed my engineering course at IAR, returned to Jamaica once again looking for work. Of course the ever positive Paul Stewart was there to help. Pablo got me my first job as an engineer at Dynamic Sounds. He walked me in to the offices and introduced me to Paul Khouri the studio manager and after a brief interview I was hired.

I was fresh ourt of school with no experience... hired. My first sessions were with Sly and Robbie working on the Black Uhuru album 'Anthem'... (that's another story).

Through Pablo's energy and circle of family and friends, I became immersed in the then current music culture of the day. I did an amazing amount of work at Dynamic Sounds and learnt alot. I toured with Third World and that experience taught me a lot. Aside from the music we enjoyed other activities like fishing and motor sports(bikes).

That was the jump off point of my career and I must give a large portion of credit to Pablo who was very instrumental with helping me 'find my way'.

Alas Pablo was taken from us leaving behind a truly blessed and gifted son Kyle, who is under the protective, nuturing and loving care of his mother Carol (another good friend of mine). it has been a while and yet will never be long enough.

Thanks Pablo..... Jah Know
