Sounds Deep
It is understandable that the NextGen can't appreciate the historical timeline of popular music as it has a longer lifespan that they do in addition to the sensory overload due to the over abundance of readily available current content. They don't have time and they don't care. This is the 'me' generation I'm talking about here... There's too much for me to do.
As I've noted in previous posts, technology has enabled a multitude of people to pursue previously otherwise un-pursuable creative outlets . Universities and colleges are churning out young professionals who also are flooding the marketplace with their skills, talents and products. The ability to harness creative energies once held by few is now in the hands of many.
The marketplace is thus overloaded with tons of product, most of it unfortunately, not worth the time and effort spent creating it. The worthwhile product that is out there is lost in a sea of digital noise and most lack the resources to be promoted fairly within the marketplace. Whoever has the bigger toy/gun/car/dick/bank account wins.
What does this mean? Well, the bar of acceptance as a result has been lowered to an all time low that requires little or no effort to clear. Now that everybody can be a star/engineer/producer/label with the click of a mouse, no longer do they have to sacrifice years to learn and master a craft, all they have to do is open an application. This also creates a 'Pearl before Swine" situation - where no one cares about the overall quality of a product - they'll consume any and all if possible. Thats like choosing a Hyundai over a severly discounted equally priced Mercedes Benz - no sense at all.As it is now it's fashionable to be in the entertainment business. Everybody is an entertainer or works in the entertainment business. Yawn - not very entertaining at all.
We are now at the mercy of purveyors of garbage and can only hope for some new multi media product that we alll must have that will put the proper creative power base back in charge of the process and hopefully stop this cultural decline that we are experiencing. Without discouraging the lesser talented we must acknowledge the efforts and results of credible worthwhile people and thus encourage others to aspire to reach higher levels of accomplishment.
